WHAT IS “BAR TALK”?
“Bar Talk” is the set of topics that fighter crews would discuss AFTER the mission debrief. During a debrief, the day’s fight would be re-created in minute detail, analyzing everyone’s role and performance, how well the plan was executed and if that plan was even a workable one that day. However, invariably, someone wants to drift off topic and tell about how his other Instructor Pilot likes to do this or that, or recount a story about the last time they went supersonic over that special someone, etc. That topical drift is known as “Bar Talk.” Why? Because it’s a great topic to save for after the debrief when we all retire to the bar and talk about “all that other stuff.”
Not that you can’t learn a LOT from Bar Talk, because YOU CAN! That’s more than half the reason why pilots hang out there. You can learn a bunch of reasons WHY things are the way they are and HOW this technique or that one is better in one situation over another. It’s where something more than knowledge is communicated, called wisdom. Well, this is where American Made can share some of that wisdom with the flying public.
This blog is dedicated to increasing understanding of the flying environment for aviators of all types to enhance their awareness and safety. Hope you have your favorite carbonated beverage ready. If you want to respond (which I’m sure you will), drop us a line at fly@americanmadeaviation.com.
